What was once the Cestrian Hotel's breakfast room and dingy basement bar has now become a refreshing addition to Chester's bar scene. The ground level bar has low leather 'bucket' seating and seductive red walls; the fish tank on the far wall would seem an incongruous addition but it actually fits in quite well. The staff are always friendly, even the bouncers are polite! Oh, and the bar serves up a fine selection of beverages, including the usual beers (Stella, Guinness, etc.) and some yummy flavoured vodkas.
Attracting a younger clientele (early 20s - late 30s) than nearby Harkers, City Bar is, not surprisingly, sometimes populated with impossibly trendy types, yet it somehow manages not to be pretentious or intimidating. The dark basement bar, replete with table football, seems to have a different DJ every night, including the popular 'Motive' nights of nostalgic hip hop, disco treats and a sprinkling of old-school indie.
I believe a short menu of ciabattas and such like are available during the day; somewhat disappointing as the bar used to serve rather tasty lunchtime treats from a Saltney deli - perhaps not enough daytime custom to continue?
