The Pied Bull

It was around the time that Thomas a Becket was being assassinated and Genghis Khan was being born that this interesting inn was built, at the top end of Northgate Street. In a lot of places, a twelfth century building would be an attraction in its own right but, in a city that was shaped a thousand years before this, it's no big deal. The Pied Bull doesn't make a fuss about its ancient past, and it comes across not so much historic as just old. In fact, as you walk in through the front door, it is the mid twentieth century that is brought to mind more than any other period.

This could all change. In 2009 the pub was bought out from the evil clutches of Punch Taverns by the incumbent management and we await signs of their efforts to improve what has been up to now a pretty mediocre offering. Already, the little bar has been graced with no fewer than six hand pumps, featuring the beers of small independent brewers. This may be a relatively small first step, but it shows promise that one day we might see the old place improved and presented as a destination in its own right.

Unfortunately, there is a lot to be done. The decor is appalling: the carpet alone is the most hideous I personally have ever had occasion to tread. The toilets are the worst in any public building in Chester: the hand basin taps only run when when pressure is applied, so I had to use my left foot to get water to wash my hands together. There needs to be a place for drinkers to sit, away from the grubby menues and condiments, and something needs to be done to get rid of the clouds of flies, possibly attracted by the pervasive smell of vinegar, which is, I understand, like nectar to their kind. It is reassuring to know that whatever changes the new owners make, things can only get better.

For now, the selection of beers and the simple though extensive menu of home-cooked meals are reason enough to visit the Pied Bull. For the future, there is no reason why this could not become a little gem of a hotel, with a must-try bar and restaurant.
