A dark, gothic renovation of one of Chester's finest old crypts, Watergates has as much character as it's decent to hope for. Don't be put off by its airs and graces (Watergates bar kitchen say the signs): this is a pub, and a very good one at that.
Through the doorway you descend into an interior so cavernous that it may
take several visits to get properly orientated. Behind you and to the right
are comfortable seated areas and straight ahead are two long tunnels with
tables and chairs leading to a shiny on-show kitchen. There is a big cosy
snug and - wonder of wonders - this crypt even boasts a smartly furnished
roof terrace! In the main bar wall decorations gild the lily of the
magnificent red sandstone masonry. We are only disappointed that - even
after its 2002 refurb - they still can't seem to get the toilets right:
more money should have been spent here.
This is a busy pub with bouncers in the evening, though you can get in
wearing jeans. Customers are young and lively and most are warming up for a
night in the clubs. Beers are excellently kept and priced very reasonably,
as is a good range of wine. Good food in the daytime. Question: where do
cellar bars keep their beer?
